"Tell me, O Muse, of that ingenious hero who travelled far and wide."
Homer's epic journey has captivated readers for thousands of years, and now you can experience Odysseus's adventures in our Dark Edition format. There's something fitting about reading this tale of gods, monsters, and ten years at sea on black pages—it adds to the atmosphere in a way that's hard to describe until you try it. Same legendary story, completely fresh reading experience.
Head of Odysseus. Marble, Greek, probably 1st century AD. From the villa of Tiberius at Sperlonga. Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Sperlonga.
About The Odyssey
What's it about? After the Trojan War ends, Odysseus just wants to get home to his wife and son in Ithaca. Should be simple, right? Instead, he spends ten years battling the Cyclops, resisting the Sirens, facing the wrath of Poseidon, and encountering gods and monsters at every turn. Meanwhile, back home, suitors have taken over his palace, convinced he's dead. It's the ultimate adventure story about cunning, perseverance, and what it means to find your way home.
Why it matters: The Odyssey basically invented the adventure genre. Every "hero's journey" story since—from Star Wars to The Lord of the Rings—owes something to Odysseus. Beyond that, it's just a great read. The characters feel surprisingly modern, the adventures are genuinely exciting, and Homer's storytelling holds up remarkably well even after nearly 3,000 years.
